Clifton and Morenci are scenically beautiful places located in Greenlee County, northeast of Tucson, along Highway
191, near the banks of the San Francisco River and the New Mexico state line. It is
approximately 210 miles from Phoenix and 160 miles from Tucson. The elevations range from 3400-4600 feet. Morenci has
an enormous open pit copper mine and it is the largest
copper producing mine in the USA.
At the heart of the Clifton town site is
colorful, fascinating Chase Creek. It boasts of a number of buildings that are examples of territorial period
architecture. The spirit of the wild and romantic days remains, with modern amenities to make it safe and comfortable for visitors. The walking tour and a visit to the Greenlee Historical Museum enhances the experience.
The spectacular Coronado Trail cuts a path northward through the mountains and valleys of the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest.
It is the birthplace of Geronimo, the famous Apache warrior chief and Ettore Ted de Grazia – an artist of the American Southwest.
