An exhibit of stunning photography by Kathleen Jo Ryan that carries the visitor down the 277 miles of rushing water and ever-changing topography of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. The exhibit also features illustrated panels with excerpts from historic and contemporary journals—the stories of the numerous souls who have braved the Colorado in Grand Canyon. River gear and historical artifacts complement the visitor’s river-level Grand Canyon experience. The exhibit is based on the award-winning book Writing Down the River: Into the Heart of the Grand Canyon, and the companion one-hour television documentary, produced by Ryan. Santan Junior High Staff book study -

Santan Junior High
1550 E. Chandler Heights Blvd.
Chandler 85249
As encouragement for teachers and classified staff to read more fiction outside of the school day, the media center sponsored a "One Book Arizona" book study group. The staff that was reading the book "These Is My Words" communicated through email about what they were reading and if they were enjoying the book. Personal connections to the story were explored through the staff. The culminating activity was a get together at a staff member's home to talk about the book in person. This was VERY successful with over 30 teachers or classified employees participating. It was open only to the Santan Junior High Staff.

58th Ave. Book Club -- How Wild Was It?

Velma Teague Branch Library
7010 N. 58th Ave.
Glendale 85301
Paul Hietter, Ph.D., a faculty member of Mesa Community College, will bring needed insight when he presents “How Wild Was It? An Overview of Crime and Justice in Arizona Territory.” According to Dr. Hietter, writers often use sensational anecdotes to describe conditions in the Trans-Mississippi West during the 1800s. The West, these incidents suggest, was a violent and crime-ridden place where ineffective criminal justice institutions forced citizens to take the law into their own hands. This presentation provides a fascinating glimpse into the Arizona Territory’s justice system using data from court cases and newspapers, and explores the types of crimes most commonly committed and the justice system’s response to them. The program is co-sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council.
